Upstate Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine

The Upstate Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine department offers a wide range of musculoskeletal and sports medicine diagnosis and treatments. From sports injuries to arthritis, they can help get you back to doing what you love.

Peter Christiano, MD

Dr. Christiano is a Central New York native. He completed medical school at SUNY Upstate in Syracuse, NY and emergency medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. From there, he went on to complete a Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV, where he was responsible for the care of high school and collegiate athletes, both on and off the field.  He is currently an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at SUNY Upstate, and a Team Physician with Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. 

Bernie Holtman, DO

Dr. Holtman was born and raised in the Syracuse area. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine and Primary Care Sports Medicine, completing both his residency and fellowship training at SUNY Upstate Medical University. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, practicing both Sports Medicine and Emergency Medicine. Dr. Holtman manages non-surgical orthopedic conditions and sports related injuries, including concussions. He is a team physician for Colgate University and Le Moyne College athletics. He has interests in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound and ultrasound guided procedures.


Paul Klawitter, MD

Dr. Klawitter is a graduate of SUNY Upstate Medical School and obtained a PhD from the Ohio State University studying skeletal muscle physiology. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine and obtained subspecialty certification in sports medicine from University at Buffalo in 2010. He has practiced non-operative orthopedics since that time. He manages the full spectrum of general and sports related non-operative orthopedic problems for all ages – from sprained ankles to fractures to arthritis. He has additional training in using musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnosis and guided procedures. He also cares for medical sports problems, including management of sports related concussion, exercise induced asthma and others. He is the head team physician for division 1 Colgate University and a team physician for the US Ski and Snowboard team.
