​University Surgical Associates

The surgical faculty at Upstate is composed of a diverse group of general surgeons who each specialize in treating complicated illnesses and conditions.  Our mission is to improve the health of the communities we serve through education, biomedical research, and health care.

Upstate Bariatrics:
Dr. Flavia Soto specializes in Bariatric, Metabolic (Weight loss Surgery), and Minimally Invasive Surgical (MIS) procedures.  She’s the Division Chief of Bariatric Surgery at Upstate Medical University, Board certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS), and an American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) Diplomat.

​Upstate Colorectal:
Dr. Jeffry Albright specializes in a number of conditions and diseases of the intestines and rectum and is a leader in the field of Minimally Invasive Surgery.  He’s board certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ABCRS).

​Upstate Thoracic:
Dr. Mark Crye is a Thoracic Surgeon at Upstate who specialize in treating diseases that affect the lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest.   He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). His clinical interests include robotic and minimally invasive surgery for lung, esophageal and mediastinal diseases.

​Dr. Michael Archer is one of the newest members to the Upstate Thoracic Surgery Team.  He is a member of the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). His clinical interests include thoracic surgical oncology utilizing minimally invasive and robotic techniques.

Dr. Jason Wallen is a board-certified thoracic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and robotic esophageal and pulmonary surgery. His research interests include lung cancer, lung infections, surgery in patients with limited pulmonary capacity, minimally invasive surgery and endoscopic procedures.

Upstate General Surgery
​Dr. Michael McGrattan is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Upstate Medical University. He specializes in all types of Adult General Surgery.

​Dr. Crystal Whitney is fellowship trained in Surgical Critical Care. She specializes in treating a wide variety of General Surgery conditions including abdominal pain, Gallbladder Disease, Hernias, and Trauma.

Upstate Vascular:
Our fellowship trained vascular surgeons specialize in the diagnosis and management of peripheral arterial and venous diseases. They’re experts in performing traditional surgery as well as the less invasive endovascular treatment options.

​​Dr. Robert Carlin specializes in Vascular Surgery, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), Aortic Aneurysm, Arterial/Venous/Lymphatic Malformation, Carotid Artery Aneurysm, Carotid Artery Disease, Deep Vein Thrombosis, Diabetic Foot Complications, Diseases of the Thoracic Aorta, Subclavian Artery Aneurysm, Varicose Veins, and Venous Disease.
